Raqaiya Riaz (2012)
Raqaiya is a highly experienced family practitioner, having spent over ten years in practice as a Solicitor. She started off her career in a niche private family law practice before going on to become the Senior Solicitor in the public law department of a Local Authority, where she dealt with family law, court of protection, immigration and education matters.
Before transferring to the Bar, Raqaiya was a member of the Law Society’s Children’s Panel.

Family & Childcare
Raqaiya is regularly instructed in both public and private family law proceedings. In public family law, she acts for Local Authorities, parents, guardians and children in what are often complex multi-day hearings involving allegations of sexual abuse, neglect, physical abuse and non-accidental injuries resulting in fatalities.
She is also experienced in cases involving Female Genital Mutilation, forced marriage and honour violence. In 2008, she secured the first Forced Marriage Protection Order in Wales.
Her private family law work covers child arrangement disputes (residence, contact, etc.) and related orders, ancillary relief proceedings and divorce.

R v Ege (2012), BBC News – Raqaiya was instructed as a noting junior in the Crown Court trial arising out of one of her care cases.
Immigration & Asylum
Raqaiya appears on behalf of appellants before the First-tier and Upper Tribunal of the Immigration and Asylum Chamber.
Her practice covers deportation, asylum, immigration and human rights appeals, as well as advising on and acting in judicial review proceedings.
Raqaiya has a particular expertise in immigration proceedings involving a crossover with family law, such as age assessment disputes and trafficked children.

Interests & Commitments
Outside of work, Raqaiya enjoys boxercise and kick-boxing, watching cricket, cooking, arts and crafts, sewing and designing Asian clothes and socialising with friends and family.
